About Client

The client has a local neighborhood gourmet grocery store in San Diego and Riverside. They carry a fantastic selection of organic, natural, and specialty foods at rock bottom prices. They deliberate on taste, ingredients, quality, and price and choose only a handful of items. They find the best products and the best prices.

Challenges

As an accessibility retainer client, their WordPress website requires reaudit, accessibility remediation upgrades aligning with WCAG 2.2 accessibility standards. The website contains a Weekly Ad section for printing purpose, so we have excluded it for accessibility remediation.

WordPress Accessibility Reaudit

Solution

A structured accessibility approach was implemented to upgrade the website effectively:

Manual Accessibility Reaudit

We conducted in-depth manual reaudit using keyboard navigation and screen readers (NVDA, Voiceover), other accessibility evaluation tools like WAVE, Google Lighthouse, Adobe Acrobat for PDF, and PAC for PDF evaluated against WCAG 2.2 level AA success criteria.

Created a manual accessibility audit report including categorized issues by severity (critical, major, minor), mapped each issue to WCAG criteria, and created a clear remediation roadmap.

Accessibility Remediation

We conducted accessibility remediation focused on WCAG 2.2 success criteria. We performed focus indicators improvements with better visibility, contrast, and consistency, enhanced compatibility with screen readers, increased clickable areas for interactive elements, provided simple click interactions, maintained consistent access to support accessibility features across pages, and reduced cognitive barriers in any form interactions.

VPAT / ACR Documentation

We’ve prepared an updated VPAT report and ACR aligned with WCAG 2.2 level AA including evaluation method, conformance status, supported features, and any exceptions.

Impact

With the process of manual accessibility reaudits, and remediation, we have done a successful upgrade from WCAG 2.1 Level AA to WCAG 2.2 Level AA with:

  • Improved usability for keyboard, mobile, and assistive technology users.
  • Enhanced accessibility for users with motor and cognitive disabilities.
  • Strengthened their compliance with updated VPAT reports and ACR. And accordingly, created a revised custom accessibility statement.
  • Reduced legal and accessibility risks.
  • Delivered a more inclusive and user-friendly digital experience without affecting performance or design.
